Grandma’s Beef Stew Recipe

2 pounds
2 small
1 cup
1 slice
1/2 cup
2 – 8 ounce cans
1 tablespoon
1 tablespoon 
stewing meat
onions, chopped
celery, cut into 1” pieces
potatoes cut in eights
carrots cut in 1” pieces
white bread, cubed
cheddar cheese, grated
tomato sauce
soy sauce
Salt & pepper to taste


Oven Temp: 275º
Recipe Cooking Time: 5 hours
Pan Type: dutch oven or similar pan

Grandma's Beef Stew Directions

Preheat Oven.

Brown beef in pan.
Add onions, carrots, celery, potatoes, tomato sauce, sugar, soy sauce, bread, stew meat and grated cheddar cheese.
Stir, cover and bake Grandma's beef stew for allotted time.
Serve with your favorite warm bread or rolls.

Recipe Note: You can add some instant potatoes to thicken your beef stew, if you like.

Substitute, substitute, substitute. Recipes were made to be messed with. Use alternative ingredients to make your recipes healthier. Cook with broth (low-sodium vegetable, low-fat chicken or beef) instead of with oils. Use vinaigrettes or citrus-juice-based dressings instead of creamy ones, which are often full of saturated fat. Try olive oil, skim milk, or yogurt instead of butter or cream. Re-work dessert recipes that require heavy cream with evaporated skim milk or yogurt. For cakes and other desserts, substitute fresh-fruit puree as a topping instead of frosting. And one of my favorites: pancakes with applesauce, not maple syrup. These changes will give your favorite recipes great new flavor, and your food will be healthier!
