Cranberry Apple Pie Recipe

Washington state is one of the premier apple and cranberry growing regions of the country. This is my all-time favorite cranberry apple pie recipe. A medley of spices gives a flavor boost to this pie, which makes a festive addition to a winter gathering.

1 1/2 cups cranberries
2 cups apples, diced
1/2 cup water
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon all-spice
1/4 teaspoon cloves
1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
1 tablespoon butter
double pie crusts

Oven Temp: 450° / 350°
Recipe Cooking Time: 10 minutes /

Cranberry Apple Pie Directions

Preheat your oven.

Combine the cranberries, apples and water in a medium saucepan.
Cook over medium heat until fruit is tender.
Add the sugar and cool slightly.
Arrange bottom crust in pie plate, spoon the apple mixture on the crust.
Arrange top crust on pie and flute edges, cut several slits in the top so that the steam can escape.
Sprinkle top with cinnamon candy sprinkles.
Bake for 10 minutes at 450° and then an additional 30 to 40 minutes at 350°. Cool on wire rack. Great served plain or with scoop of ice cream.

Substitute, substitute, substitute. Recipes were made to be messed with. Use alternative ingredients to make your recipes healthier. Cook with broth (low-sodium vegetable, low-fat chicken or beef) instead of with oils. Use vinaigrettes or citrus-juice-based dressings instead of creamy ones, which are often full of saturated fat. Try olive oil, skim milk, or yogurt instead of butter or cream. Re-work dessert recipes that require heavy cream with evaporated skim milk or yogurt.
