Apple Cherry Pie Recipe

We made this pie last night, with the first harvest of our new pie-cherry tree.
Simply delicious with the tartness of pie cherries and the sweet crisp flavor of honey crisp apples.

Apple Cherry Pie on Crystal
1 1/2 cups cherries, pitted
1 1/2 cups honey crisp apples, diced
1/2 cup water
1 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup flour
1 teaspoon cinnamon
1 tablespoon butter
double pie crusts

Oven Temp: 450° / 350°
Recipe Cooking Time: 10 minutes and 30 to 40 minutes
Pan Type: 9" pie plate

Apple Cherry Pie Directions

Preheat your oven.

Combine the cherries, apples and water into a medium saucepan.
Cook apple mix over medium heat until the fruit is tender.
Stir the sugar, flour and cinnamon together; add to the slightly cooled apple and cherry mixture, stir gently until completely mixed.
Arrange a bottom crust into the pie plate.
Spoon the apple mixture onto crust.
Dot with butter and arrange a top crust on top of the apple cherry pie.
Cut several slits into the crust so steam can escape.

Bake your apple pie for 10 minutes at 450° and then an additional 30 to 40 minutes at 350°.
If the crust browns too quickly, then cover loosely with a piece of tin foil.
Cool pie on a wire rack.
Apple cherry pie is great served plain or with a scoop of your favorite ice cream.

Recipe Serves: 6 – 8

Substitute, substitute, substitute. Recipes were made to be messed with. Use alternative ingredients to make your recipes healthier. Cook with broth (low-sodium vegetable, low-fat chicken or beef) instead of with oils. Use vinaigrettes or citrus-juice-based dressings instead of creamy ones, which are often full of saturated fat. Try olive oil, skim milk, or yogurt instead of butter or cream. Re-work dessert recipes that require heavy cream with evaporated skim milk or yogurt. For cakes and other desserts, substitute fresh-fruit puree as a topping instead of frosting. And one of my favorites: pancakes with applesauce, not maple syrup. These changes will give your favorite recipes great new flavor, and your food will be healthier!
