Apple Strudel Recipe

4 cups
1/2 cup
1 1/2 teaspoon
1/2 cup
1 teaspoon
1/3 cup
4 ounces (5 leaves)
1 cup
1/2 cup
apples, peeled, sliced
raisins
lemon rind, grated
granulated sugar
cinnamon
almonds, ground fine
phyllo dough, thawed
butter, melted
bread crumbs, fine

Oven Temp: 400°
Recipe Cooking Time: 20 to 25 minutes
Pan Type: cookie sheet

Apple Strudel Directions

Preheat your oven.

In a large mixing bowl combine the sliced apples, raisins, lemon rind, granulated sugar, cinnamon and ground almonds. Mix apple mixture gently and set aside.
Place 1 phyllo leaf onto a bread board and brush generously with melted butter.
Place a second phyllo leaf on top and generously brush with butter.
Repeat 3 more times for a total of 5 leaves.
You should use about 1 1/2 teaspoons of butter on each leaf. Combine 1/4 cup of butter and bread crumbs in a small saucepan.
Cook over medium heat until lightly browned.
Sprinkle with the buttered crumbs on top of the buttered phyllo leaves.
Spoon filling down the middle of the buttered dough, leaving 2" on all sides.
Lift the towel to roll the leave around the apple strudel mixture.
Roll into a jelly roll fashion.
Generously brush the top of strudel with butter.
Bake apple strudel for the allotted time or until lightly browned.
Serve strudel along with your favorite coffee or tea.

Recipe Note: Phyllo dough can be found in the frozen food section at the supermarket. Fillo brand of phyllo dough is common in your local grocery store.

Recipe Serves: 6 – 8

Substitute, substitute, substitute. Recipes were made to be messed with. Use alternative ingredients to make your recipes healthier. Cook with broth (low-sodium vegetable, low-fat chicken or beef) instead of with oils. Use vinaigrettes or citrus-juice-based dressings instead of creamy ones, which are often full of saturated fat. Try olive oil, skim milk, or yogurt instead of butter or cream. Re-work dessert recipes that require heavy cream with evaporated skim milk or yogurt. For cakes and other desserts, substitute fresh-fruit puree as a topping instead of frosting. And one of my favorites: pancakes with applesauce, not maple syrup. These changes will give your favorite recipes great new flavor, and your food will be healthier!
