Apple Betty Recipe

Fresh Apple Betty made from our own Honey Crisp Apples.

You don't have to make pie crust! You can control the sweetness by the amount of streusel topping you use.
Let apples fill your kitchen with the sweet smell of the fall harvest.

4 cups thinly sliced apples
1/4 cup orange juice
1 cup sugar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 cup all-purpose flour
2/3 cup granulated sugar
1/2 cup (1 stick) margarine or butter, softened

Stove Temp: 425 ° (220 degrees C)
Recipe Cooking Time:
Pan Type: 9 x 9 inch baking dish

Apple Betty Directions

Preheat oven.Heat the oven to 375º.

Cut each of the apples into 4 sections on the cutting board, using the knife. Cut out the apple core and seeds. Peel apple sections with the knife.

Cut apple sections into slices (you should have about 4 cups). Put apple slices in the pan.

Combine the 1 cup sugar and cinnamon in the small bowl. Stir with the spoon until mixed. Sprinkle sugar mixture over apples. Pour the orange juice over apples.

Put the flour, 2/3 cup of granulated sugar and margarine in the medium bowl. Mix with your hands until the mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle crumbly mixture over apples.

Bake until apples are soft and topping is golden brown.
Take pan out of oven and cool on the wire rack for 10 minutes.

Serve warm with homemade ice cream.

Substitute, substitute, substitute. Recipes were made to be messed with. Use alternative ingredients to make your recipes healthier. Cook with broth (low-sodium vegetable, low-fat chicken or beef) instead of with oils. Use vinaigrettes or citrus-juice-based dressings instead of creamy ones, which are often full of saturated fat. Try olive oil, skim milk, or yogurt instead of butter or cream. Re-work dessert recipes that require heavy cream with evaporated skim milk or yogurt. For cakes and other desserts, substitute fresh-fruit puree as a topping instead of frosting. And one of my favorites: pancakes with applesauce, not maple syrup. These changes will give your favorite recipes great new flavor, and your food will be healthier!
