Sandy Calico Beans Recipe

lean ground round
regular cut bacon, chopped
onion, chopped
pork & beans
kidney beans
pinto beans, drained
brown sugar, packed firm
granulated sugar
prepared mustard

Recipe Cooking Time: 45 minutes
Pan Type: skillet

Calico Beans Directions

Brown the ground round meat and onion in a large skillet, then drain.

In a second skillet cook the bacon until crisp. Remove bacon from skillet and drain on paper towels.

In a large sauce pan combine the browned ground round, crisp bacon, un drained pork & beans, un drained kidney beans, drained pinto beans, brown sugar, granulated sugar, vinegar, prepared mustard and ketchup. Simmer the calico beans on top of stove for 30 to 45 minutes. Sandy's calico beans recipe if fairly simple to make and filled with good flavor.

Substitute, substitute, substitute. Recipes were made to be messed with. Use alternative ingredients to make your recipes healthier. Cook with broth (low-sodium vegetable, low-fat chicken or beef) instead of with oils. Use vinaigrettes or citrus-juice-based dressings instead of creamy ones, which are often full of saturated fat. Try olive oil, skim milk, or yogurt instead of butter or cream. Re-work dessert recipes that require heavy cream with evaporated skim milk or yogurt. For cakes and other desserts, substitute fresh-fruit puree as a topping instead of frosting. And one of my favorites: pancakes with applesauce, not maple syrup. These changes will give your favorite recipes great new flavor, and your food will be healthier!
