Sharp Caraway Bread Recipe

1 1/4 cups
1 package
1 cup
2 tablespoons
2 tablespoons
2 teaspoons
1 1/2 teaspoons
2 2/3 cup
2 tablespoons
warm water
quick rise yeast
sharp cheddar cheese, shredded
granulated sugar
caraway seeds
all purpose flour
butter, melted
nonstick pan spray

Oven Temp: 375°
Recipe Cooking Time: 40 minutes
Pan Type: 9 x 5" loaf pan

Caraway Bread Directions

Preheat Oven.

Heat the water to warm, (120°). Pour warm water into a large mixing bowl. Add the yeast and stir until dissolved. Add the cheese, Crisco, granulated sugar, salt, caraway seeds and 2 cups of the flour. Stir with a spoon to blend, then beat with electric mixer for 2 minutes. Stir in remaining flour with a wooden spoon. Cover caraway bread dough with a clean cloth and let set until dough doubles in size. Use a wooden spoon and beat dough down. Spray pan with nonstick pan spray. Pour batter into prepared pan. Bake sharp caraway bread for the allotted time or until bread sounds hollow when tapped with fingers. Remove the hot caraway bread from pan and cool onto a wire rack. Brush the bread top with melted butter.

Recipe Note: Fresh baked bread does not always make it until it cools at our house.

Substitute, substitute, substitute. Recipes were made to be messed with. Use alternative ingredients to make your recipes healthier. Cook with broth (low-sodium vegetable, low-fat chicken or beef) instead of with oils. Use vinaigrettes or citrus-juice-based dressings instead of creamy ones, which are often full of saturated fat. Try olive oil, skim milk, or yogurt instead of butter or cream. Re-work dessert recipes that require heavy cream with evaporated skim milk or yogurt. For cakes and other desserts, substitute fresh-fruit puree as a topping instead of frosting. And one of my favorites: pancakes with applesauce, not maple syrup. These changes will give your favorite recipes great new flavor, and your food will be healthier!
