Good Sourdough Starter Recipe

2 cups
3 tablespoon
2 teaspoons
1 1/2 cups
flour
sugar
salt
water

Recipe Container: large glass bowl or crock


Sourdough Starter Directions

Combine in a large glass bowl or stone crock, the flour, sugar and salt, stir well.
Add the warm water and beat until sourdough starter mixture is smooth.
Cover sourdough mixture with a thin towel or cheesecloth, then set in a warm place until thoroughly sour.

Recipe Wisdom: You will know when the sourdough starter is sour by the smell. When it has a strong yeasty smell, then its ready. Making sourdough starter takes approximately 24 – 36 hours.

Note: To keep the sourdough starter going like mom did for various uses, leave at least 1/2 cup of the starter in the container and add the above ingredients to it. Mix well, cover the new sourdough and the starter will be ready the following morning.

Substitute, substitute, substitute. Recipes were made to be messed with. Use alternative ingredients to make your recipes healthier. Cook with broth (low-sodium vegetable, low-fat chicken or beef) instead of with oils. Use vinaigrettes or citrus-juice-based dressings instead of creamy ones, which are often full of saturated fat. Try olive oil, skim milk, or yogurt instead of butter or cream. Re-work dessert recipes that require heavy cream with evaporated skim milk or yogurt. For cakes and other desserts, substitute fresh-fruit puree as a topping instead of frosting. And one of my favorites: pancakes with applesauce, not maple syrup. These changes will give your favorite recipes great new flavor, and your food will be healthier!
